When National Pork Board directors
recently met with Texas pork producers,
they were told about the growing problem
of feral hogs in Texas. Brad Greenway, a Pork
Board member and South Dakota producer, said this problem is becoming
difficult to deal with and should be a concern for hog producers throughout
the US. What’s more, Greenway said feral hogs are showing up in other
states where they’ve never appeared before.
Another problem in Texas that could make the feral hog problem more
difficult is there are hunting refuges that transport feral hogs into the area
for hunters – and that creates a host of concerns. The Pork Board may have
to look at providing research funding to look into the feral hog problem.
