Praxair demonstrates cryogenic
freezing expertise at 2014 IPPE

P

raxair marked the New Year by making a big splash at IPPE in January with
its ColdFront Cryo-Saver Tunnel Freezer.
With plant space at a premium and more
processors maximizing production in existing facilities, the Cryo-Saver highlighted
the company's systems on display, demonstrating the themes of saving space, optimizing operating costs, increasing yields
and flexibility. As the company's newest
addition to its tunnel freezers, the CryoSaver breaks new ground by dramatically
reducing the air infiltration into the freezer thanks to its angled design at each end
of the system. Operating cost savings attributed to this design change is up to 15
percent because products are chilled using
cryogen as opposed to the infiltrated air.
Product is conveyed continuously through
the modular system as cryogen is injected
in the freezer and treats each individual
product. Consistency is ensured by an automated temperature-control system that

adjusts the cryogen injection based on the
product load and fans that provide even
chilling throughout the freezer.
"This is truly a new product introduction and very different from anything
on the floor or in the industry," said Phil
Davis at the Praxair booth.
Piggybacking on the Praxair Coldfront
Even Chill system that was rolled out in
2013 for automated and consistent chilling
of products stored in bulk bins, designers
introduced a solution for processors unable
to take advantage of the technology due to
height constraints in their plants. For them,
a double-door option is available that opens
horizontally as opposed to vertically.
"A lot of our customers told us they
were interested in the benefits of the Coldfront Even Chill, but they were challenged
by the overhead space requirements of the
door configuration," said Davis.

Freezer. Producing individually quick-frozen products using the Praxair system includes starting out with quick-crust freezing
at the entrance to the system using cryogen,
followed by careful tumbling and strategic
cryogenic injection throughout the freezer
tunnel. The evenly frozen product ensures
consistency and quality to processors of
meat and poultry.
Also in the name of minimizing
equipment footprints, the ColdFront Ultra
Performance Flighted Freezer System offers a wider belt width and a shorter tunnel
to preserve floor space. The freezer additionally features a hygienic design to take
the guesswork out of the jobs of cleaning
and sanitation crews while easy accessibility inside the freezer makes maintaining
the system easier. For complete accessibility
during clean-up and maintenance, vertical
doors on both sides of the freezer swing out
of the way to allow access to the freezer's
interior. Product guides and scraper bars
are also removable for cleaning and additional access. The design also allows the
operator to see the entire interior floor of
the freezer, making debris easier to identify
and remove. To address maintenance and
service challenges, belt motors and drives
are located outside the freezer, saving time
and ensuring maximum uptime.
