president of scientific and regulatory affairs, noted that the direct relationship between healthy chickens and a safe food supply makes raising healthy birds a top priority for farmers and poultry companies. "Responsible, FDA-approved veterinary treatment and prevention benefits animal welfare and human health by reducing the need for increased doses of antibiotics in the event of widespread disease," Peterson said. "McDonald's, veterinarians and animal scientists recognize their importance to minimize the use of those antibiotics that are important in human medicine," she said. Under Food and Drug Administration guidance, by December 2016 antibiotics important to human health will be labeled for use in food animals only to treat sick livestock and birds and to prevent spread of disease, she said. Also, antibiotics will be used exclusively under the supervision and prescription of veterinarians. SANDERSON NAMES SITE FOR NEW POULTRY PLANT Sanderson Farms Inc., Laurel, Miss., will build its new poultry complex in St. Pauls, Robeson County, NC. The company said the poultryprocessing plant and waste-water treatment facilities will comprise a state-of-the-art poultry complex with a processing capacity of 1.25 million birds per week for the big-bird deboning market. The company also has sites under consideration for a new hatchery. The company expects to invest approximately $139 million in the new North Carolina complex. The project also includes upgrades to Sanderson's Kinston, NC, feed mill. The company anticipates that associated contract growers will invest an additional $168 million in poultry production facilities. Sanderson expects to begin construction of the facilities this summer, with initial operations of the new complex to begin during the fourth fiscal quarter of 2016. At full capacity, the complex will employ approximately 1,100 people and will require 100 contract growers. The company expects the plant to process 500 million lbs. of dressed poultry meat annually at full production. TYSON PLANT TO UNDERGO $47M UPGRADE Tyson Foods Inc. announced plans to invest $47 million on a new, expanded boxedbeef warehouse at the company's processing facility in Lexington, Neb. Construction on the building is expected to begin this spring; completion of the project is set for mid-2016. The project will include a 50,000-sq.ft. warehouse on the southeast corner of the existing complex. The Lexington plant produces commodity cuts of fresh ribs, loins, chucks and rounds in addition to various ground-beef products. The company expects the new addition to improve the flow, efficiency and capacity of the plant's boxed-beef storage and distribution systems. Products are vacuumpacked and boxed for sale to retail and foodservice customers.
