PRESTAGE FARMS PLANS FOR NEW PORK PLANT
Prestage Farms announced plans to build a new fresh pork
processing facility in Mason City, Iowa, in conjunction
with the creation of a new company, Prestage Foods of
Iowa, LLC. The project must receive final state approvals.
The plans include a facility covering more than 650,000
sq. ft. with a capacity to slaughter 10,000 hogs per day.
As many as 1,000 workers will be employed at the facility
to operate one shift with the possibility of expanding to
a second shift in the future. Prestage expects the plant
project to cost more than $240 million with an annual
payroll of more than $40 million.
The rationale for building the plant stems from
consolidation in the pork packing industry which
has "decreased competition for live hogs and helped
depress prices to hog producers..." The company said
building the plant will enable Prestage Farms to increase
competition and maximize the value of its hogs. The
company does not anticipate any major shifts in its
existing production systems.
"Having produced market hogs in Iowa for the past
dozen years, we believe Mason City is the right place for
us to strategically build this new plant," Ron Prestage,
DVM, said in a statement on behalf of the Prestage family.

GMO LABELING COMING TO
CONAGRA FOODS, GENERAL MILLS
ConAgra Foods, Omaha, Nebraska, has joined the list
of consumer packaged goods companies that will label
its products that contain bioengineered ingredients. The
company said its decision is a response to Vermont's state
law requiring such labeling. Other companies that have
recently announced similar initiatives include the Campbell
Soup Co., General Mills, Kellogg Co. and Mars, Inc.
"We stand behind the health and safety of all of our
products, including those with genetically modified
ingredients, and believe consumers should be informed as
to what's in their food," the company said. "But addressing
state-by-state labeling requirements adds significant
complications and costs for food companies. With a
multitude of other states currently considering different
GMO labeling requirements, the need for a national,
uniform approach in this area is as critical as ever. That's
why we continue to urge Congress to pass a national
solution as quickly as possible."
"Vermont state law requires us to start labeling certain
grocery store food packages that contain GMO ingredients
or face significant fines," said Jeff Harmening, executive
vice president and chief operating officer for General Mills'
US Retail division, in a blog post published March 18.
Harmening also called for a "national solution" with
regards to GMO labeling.

"All sides of this debate, 20 years of research, and every
major health and safety agency in the world agree that
GMOs are not a health or safety concern," he said. "At the
same time, we know that some consumers are interested
in knowing which products contain GMO ingredients.

JBS REPORTS Q4 LOSS OF $72.8M
JBS SA, the world's largest meat packer, posted a fourthquarter loss of R$275.1 million ($72.8 million) compared to
R$618.8 million reported in the year-ago quarter.
For the year, JBS SA reported net income of R$4.6
billion ($1.2 billion), a 127.9 percent gain over 2014.
Consolidated sales for the year totaled R$163 billion, a 35
percent increase compared to 2014.
"Our global production platform, unique in the market,
combined with our relentless pursuit of operational
excellence, permitted us to register good results during
2015," Wesley Batista, JBS global CEO, said in a statement.
On a segment basis, net income at Pilgrim's Pride Corp.
(PPC), the poultry unit of JBS SA, plunged 62.2 percent to
$63.1 million in the fourth quarter due to lower prices for
chicken and lower export volume.
JBS said PPC management has identified $185 million
in operational improvements for 2016, which the company
expects "will increase operational efficiencies, enhance
relationships with key companies and expand its prepared
products portfolio."
JBS USA Beef, which includes Australia and Canada,
reported net sales decline of 11.4 percent to total $5.25
billion. Headwinds for the unit included lower availability
of cattle and heifer retention for herd expansion, a stronger
dollar and higher imports of beef. In Australia, supplies of
cattle gradually declined which led to reduced volume sold.
Foreign exchange variation impacted prices, JBS said.
Sales at JBS's pork unit advanced 12.8 percent in the
fourth quarter to total $1.1 billion. The company attributed
the result to incremental sales from its newly acquired
Cargill Pork assets.
