WHAT ARE MITES
COSTING YOU?
Not only do mites affect poultry health, they are
costing producers millions in production.
While poultry producers in North America may know
about the damage to birds caused by northern fowl mites
(Ornithonyssus sylviarum), they might not be as aware of
the threat that red mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) pose.

Red mites - a growing, potential threat
"Red mites are found in wild bird populations in the U.S.,
and they have been reported to infest backyard chickens.
Thus, they have the potential to become a real issue
for producers here," explains Richard Hack, a medical
veterinary entomologist.
While red mites feed on the blood of the host, they do not
reside there. Around dusk every few days, they will move
out from their hiding place, including cracks and crevices
of the facility, and feed on hens for up to an hour, then
return to their hiding place to digest the blood meal,
mate and lay eggs.

Northern fowl mites - a clear and present danger
"Northern fowl mites live on the birds all the time,
concentrating in the vent area and under the wings
of the chicken, and they feed constantly," says Hack.
"Populations tend to increase during cooler months and
infestations are more likely in younger flocks."
As a result of mites constantly removing blood from the
host, birds may become anemic, exhibiting a pale, pink
comb. Feathers in the vent area will be soiled.
Due to the stress caused by northern fowl mites, feed
efficiency can be reduced by up to 5.7 percent, egg
weights up to 2.2 percent and profits per hen by 7 to 10
cents over a 10-week period.1 Egg production can drop
by 10 percent or more along with eggshell quality and
size as well as fertility and hatchability in breeders.2
Both red mites and northern fowl mites are easily
transmitted from bird to bird either directly or by crawling
from one to the other. Also, workers can easily carry
them from house to house on their clothing or footwear.
In fact, just about anything that moves - people, wild
birds, rodents, animals, vehicles - is a potential vector.
Producers often learn they have a problem after workers
complain about skin irritation caused by mites.

Choose the right treatment
"If there is an infestation, it is critical that the entire
facility is properly treated as soon as possible," advises
Hack. "Because treatment options are limited, producers
need to choose one that is going to be the most effective
in the long run." One such option is Elector® PSP, which
controls both red mites and northern fowl mites in the U.S.
For red mites, the facility itself is treated and not the
birds directly. Because red mites live in cracks and
crevices, every surface of the house has to be treated,
including all walls and underneath cages and nest boxes.
To effectively treat an infestation of northern fowl mites,
the birds need to be sprayed directly. "You have to
directly treat the vent area of the birds along with the
nests, which means you need a sprayer that is designed
to have enough pressure to penetrate the feathers," says
Hack.
Treatment with Elector PSP at recommended levels is
enough to break the life cycle and help control northern
fowl mites and red mites from infesting layers and
breeders. Eggs don't have to be removed to treat birds.
In addition, Elector PSP poses no cross-resistance issues
for producers who use pyrethroids or organophosphates.3
Hack has some advice for poultry producers when
treating their houses for infestations: "Treatment is
an investment in both time and effort," he says. "To be
effective, you need to take your time and be as thorough
as possible and treat every possible area. If not done
properly, you could be risking so much more by saving a
few hours of treatment."
