Letter from SFA See You at SNAXPO e are pleased to present the February 2011 issue of Snack World, SFA’s official quarterly magazine. The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed by President Barack Obama. The new law, which SFA supported and worked closely with other industry organizations and Congress to develop, is the most sweeping change to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act since the law was originally passed in 1946. The new law grants the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) many additional powers, including the power to demand a food be recalled upon evidence that it is adulterated. It also requires food processors to demonstrate to FDA they have a risk-based approach to food processing in each facility and that their Food Safety Plan is being implemented. Fortunately, this final version of the bill did not include across-the-board user fees that had been considered by Congress in earlier versions. Included in this issue of Snack World is a review of the new law, and how it will affect the snack food industry. Martin Hahn and Joseph Levitt, partners at Hogan Lovells US LLP, will also present a special session on FSMA at SNAXPO 2011, and we encourage you to attend this important program. During 2010, even as the association focused on representing members in the halls of government, we also were looking forward and planning for SFA’s future. A new Long Range Plan was unanimously approved by the SFA board at SNAXPO 2010. The plan will ensure that the association continues to provide the right programs and services to its members and continues to grow and prosper. As we look to 2011, we will continue to cooperate with other allied associations and industry organizations such as the Tortilla Industry Association, the Peanut & Tree Nut Processors Association and others, whether it’s on the legislative front or on industry education, to develop programs and services that continue to advance the interests of our members and that or the snack food industry. Finally, SNAXPO 2011, the world’s premier event for the snack food industry, will be held March 20-23 in Orlando, FL. This year, we have more than 125 of the snack food industry’s leading suppliers of processing equipment, food ingredients, packaging and other products and services used by the snack food industry slated to attend the show. We will also present a number of important education sessions that will address the most pressing issues affecting our industry. We look forward to seeing you there!
