S TA T E O F T H E I N D U S T R Y R E P O R T covering all outlets in the US, dollar sales of cookies were off by 2.46% for the 52 weeks ending Feb. 20, 2011, while unit sales declined 1.86% and volume dropped 1.78%. To boost the cookie category’s acceptance with consumers, cookie manufacturers are rolling out products to meet virtually every taste and need, from low-calorie to decadent offerings, as well as those touting all-natural ingredients or gluten-free status. Oreos, from Northfield, IL-based Kraft Foods, long a favorite of kids of all ages, launched Fudge Creme flavors of its top cookie varieties including Golden and Peanut Butter Creme. They’re promoted with a TV ad as well as online with a Facebook fan page and a consumer survey (31% liked the original best, but 25% picked the Peanut Butter Creme). However, for caloriecounting consumers, 100-Cal Oreo packages are available. Last April, Kraft introduced a limited-edition Oreo DQ Blizzard Creme cookie that added more than $3 million in sales to the company’s total, Mintel reported. Kraft Foods is the leading cookie manufacturer, with its fortunes driven by the Oreo and Chips Ahoy! brands. It has nearly triple the sales of second-place Kellogg Company, Battle Creek, MI, according to Mintel. Meanwhile, Pepperidge Farm, Inc., Norwalk, CT, came out with a new line of Milano Melts, offered in Dark Classic Crème, Chocolate Dark Classic Crème and Chocolate Crème. From Charlotte, NC-based Snyder’s-Lance, Inc.’s Archway brand comes three new cookie varieties: Triple Chocolate, baked with three different flavors of chocolate chips; Shortbread, featuring a buttery taste topped with a sprinkle of sugar, and Peanut Butter, made with crushed peanuts. They complement a long line of cookies from a brand that has been shared by consumers for nearly 75 years. According to Mintel, when consumers decide to have a cookie, they focus more on taste than on health implications, and many consumers consider them to be an “affordable indulgence.” Chocolate is the most common flavor-based introduction, and the number of new dark chocolate launches doubled in 2010 compared with the previous year, the company noted. — Bob Gatty CORN SNACKS The Scoop on Corn Chips When it comes to corn chips, as Fritos goes, so goes the category. That’s because Frito-Lay North America, Plano, TX, simply dominates this category with its powerhouse brand. According to SymphonyIRI data, three of the Top 5 performers in this segment are versions of Fritos signature corn chips, and they account for more than 80% of the category’s total sales in the supermarket chan26 Snack World May 2011 www.sfa.org BROUGHT TO YOU BY HEAT AND CONTROL, MANE, PRINTPACK, INC., AND J.R.
