Marketing The Snack School SFA rebrands management workshop, creating an interactive program for operations as well as sales and marketing managers. BY BOB GATTY I n partnership with Saint Joseph’s University’s Food Marketing Program, the Snack Food Association (SFA) modified its traditional annual management workshop and developed a new, sharply focused two-day educational event, called The Snack School. Designed to deliver interactive educational activities for managers in both operations and sales and marketing, The Snack School, to be held Oct. 15-16 at St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, PA, will include tours, discussion groups, insightful speakers, panel discussions and social activities. “We simply felt that it was time to kick our management workshop up a notch,” explained Chris Clark, SFA vice-president, “By partnering with Saint Joseph’s University, we believe that we’ve been able to do that. They will bring knowledge, expertise and insight to our program, and we are delighted to be working with them.” The event gets under way with a welcome reception and dinner on Sunday, Oct. 14. Then, The Snack School convenes on Monday morning with a discussion on government regulations and the snack food industry. “In this session, we will hear about recent regulatory changes and how they impact our industry,” Mr. Clark explained. “We’ll explore what future changes are anticipated and proactive approaches company leaders might take given our changing industry and the changing regulatory environment.” FIRST-DAY FIELD TRIPS. Next, the topic will turn to “Issues and Opportunities in Leadership: Concepts and Characteristics.” This discussion explores how current and future executives can successfully lead their departments or organizations through constant forces of change. It will be the first of a two-part discussion that will conclude Tuesday afternoon. “Leaders need knowledge, skills and abilities to understand themselves, their business and their employees fully to drive the change they wish to see,” Mr. Clark explained. “This session will delve into the characteristics of effective leaders, look at case studies in leadership and explore how one can lead strategically. I believe this session has the potential of bringing some real insight to those who participate.” Following lunch, operations executives will tour one of Philadelphia’s favorite snack food companies, Tasty Baking Co. Meanwhile, the sales and marketing group will tour selected retail stores. Tours will be facilitated by St. Joseph’s Food Marketing faculty and staff, and participants will receive a framework that will provide a medium from which they will see, listen and learn during their visits.
