any such stricter standards.

Meanwhile, SFA will submit
comments to the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA)
requirements for the foods and
beverages offered in vending
machines or snack bars.
The new standards call for
lower fat, sugar and sodium
content and items that provide
more of the nutrients needed to
promote healthy development.
The rule would not affect the
breakfasts and lunches served
in cafeterias, which were the
subject of stricter guidelines
implemented last year by USDA.
Neither would they apply to
treats provided by parents for
birthday or holiday parties
nor foods sold at after-school
sporting events.
According to USDA, 39 states
and many local school districts
have their own requirements for
competitive foods, and the new
federal proposal would not override
this summer on provisions of
the Food Safety Modernization
Act that affect the snack food
industry. FDA has extended
the deadline for comments
until September.
