To further meet the demand for more convenient packaged snacks, the company’s Orchard Valley Harvest line of nuts introduced mini bags to give consumers looking for a smaller healthy grab-and-go snack. Seed sales also benefit from the g grab-and-go snacking occasion. ConAgra, Omaha, NE, which owns the David brand, fits its innovation with the convenient nature of seeds as a snack, according to Dan Skinner, manager, public relations/social media, ConAgra. “We’re looking for areas where the David brand would make sense and resonate in terms of a logical fit with our heritage in seeds — kind of easyto-go, hold-in-your-hand and throw-in-your-mouthtype of snacks,” he said. To further excite consumers’ taste buds, nut and seed producers now experiment with interesting flavor combinations. The seeds side of the category has always been bursting with innovative flavors like those from Thanasi Foods, Boulder, CO, which offers its Bigs sunflower seeds in cobranded flavors such as Bacon Salt Sizzlin’ Bacon, Heinz Salt & Vinegar, Vlasic Dill Pickle, Hidden Valley Ranch and Frank’s Redhot Buffalo Wing. ConAgra’s David brand, which offers sunflower seeds in flavors such as Dill Pickle and Nacho Cheese, has expanded into almonds with David’s Wasabi & Soy Sauce Almonds. Blue Diamond, Sacramento, CA, branched out its almond flavors to include product lines combining almonds with fruit and coffee. The company introduced three fruit-flavored almond varieties: Strawberry, Blueberry and Raspberry. These snacks offer consumers the benefits of vitamin E as well as protein. Its new Coffee Almond line comes in Mocha, Caramel Macchiato and Roasted Coffee flavors. Consumer needs for convenient healthy snacks have enabled the nuts and seeds category to continue to see growth throughout the years. With more innovative flavors, convenient packaging and break-through mixes, snack producers hope to keep the sales momentum moving in the right direction. — Charlotte Atchley www.sfa.org May 2013 Snack World 37 http://www.sfa.org
