Supplier's Corner Managing Change T CANTRELL his has been a year filled with a number of changes for our industry, many of which will have a lasting impact. The recent passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act requires SFA members to increase the amount of testing and record-keeping to ensure compliance. This law is only part of the increasingly more complex (and litigious) regulatory environment in which we must operate. Changing consumer views around GMOs, sodium and food safety mean it's more important than ever that we respond to these issues in a well-educated, consistent manner. Those of you who are employers face increasing regulation involving direct and contract employees. For example, proposed changes regarding independent contractor status and driver hours-of-service could have a lasting effect on those upon whom we depend to produce and deliver our products. An increasingly fragmented Washington means it is more difficult to find common allies with whom we can work on proposed policy changes affecting our industry. Consolidation within the snack food industry has always occurred, but in the past few years, it appears the pace has quickened considerably, both for manufacturers and suppliers. Such consolidation inevitably involves changes within upper management teams, which mean that people we have known or worked with for many years are no longer there. During this period of rapid change, it's more important than ever to stay active within our organization. SFA is our best way to keep informed on the many issues facing this industry and to provide a means of having input regarding policies affecting us. As Chip Mann, SFA chairman, mentioned in his letter, the association is in the process of adjusting the current educational programs and adding additional courses (like the one-day HACCP/food safety courses being held across the country) to add even more value to our members. Our annual Executive Leadership Forum (ELF) and SNAXPO meetings allow us as an association to receive updates about current issues facing the industry and are great ways to network with each other to share best practices. We all know change is inevitable ... it's how we manage it that makes the biggest difference between success and failure. Your active participation in the Snack Food Association is the best way of ensuring our continued success during these times of extensive change.
