Dieticians forecast
2014 nutrition trends
According to a survey of more than 500 dietitians
conducted by Pollock Communications, America's
demand for nutrition information is at an all-time
high, and there's no shortage of outlets talking about
diets. The survey outlined several diet, nutrition and
food trends that will make headlines, influence foodpurchasing decisions in 2014.
Topping the list was an anti-wheat sentiment.
According to report, consumers will continue to lean
on wheat-deprived diets like Paleo or gluten-free,
despite the lack of evidence to support wheat- or
gluten-elimination diets for weight loss or health not
associated with a clinical disorder or disease, said
Jenna A. Bell, senior vice-president and director of
food & wellness at Pollock Communications.
Ancient grains are new again, despite the popularity of low-grain diets. And dietitians predict the lowfat diet will be the least talked about plan in 2014.
Additionally, dieticians believe Americans have
become a little too comfortable with their weight. The
national averages for body weight have not budged, and
dietitians worry that Americans may be becoming complacent about unhealthy weight. Forty-four percent feel
that more consumers are accepting an unhealthy weight.
Finally, consumers have an insatiable appetite for
nutrition and diet information. According to 66% of
the respondents, consumers' interest in nutrition and
weight loss will only grow in 2014. For the complete

Of 50 million frequent snackers who prefer salted
snacks, 14.2 million self-professed "healthy" snackers who exercise often and seek out better-for-you
ingredients said they do not see a conflict between
eating salty snacks and pursuing a healthy diet.

Back to Nature Foods Co., a portfolio company of
Brynwood Partners VI, acquired the SnackWell's cookies and snacks business from Mondelez Global. Terms
and conditions of the transaction were not disclosed.
