of fires. The first one struck and destroyed half of
the company's flagship Bluffton, IN, plant in 1997.
Fortunately, it didn't damage the offices or the ovens, allowing the business - founded by Bill Mann
and Bill Huggins in 1979 - to survive and thrive.
Then in June 2016, an oven fire burned down its
Canonsburg, PA, peanut butter-filled pretzel plant.
In both cases, the family-owned business demonstrated its character and did what good companies
do. It took care of its people, keeping full-time
employees on the payroll as the company rebuilt.
Fortunately, no one was hurt in either fire.
"It's the philosophy that our owners have," explained William "Chip" Mann II, who, along with
Steve Huggins, serves as co-CEO and worked with
their dads in the business for nearly three decades.
"People rank first, and they are what make our
company work. We value our customers, but it's
our employees that have made our company so
successful over the years."
After the Canonsburg fire, Pretzels, Inc., paid

about 35 employees for 90 days and even hired
an outplacement service to help retrain those who
wanted new jobs, according to Steve Huggins.
At the same time, the major emphasis focused
on getting back to business in a hurry. In 1997,
it took Pretzels, Inc., just six months to repair its
Bluffton facility and rebound. The restarting of its
filled-pretzel business ended up taking a bit longer
- but not much - only nine months.
That's because the company started over with a
new 45,000-sq-ft operation in Plymouth, IN, about
a 90-minute drive from its 206,000-sq-ft Bluffton
operation, which currently houses eight pretzel ovens that produce 75 million lb a year and two extracted corn lines that crank out 15 million lb a year.
Because the company is a private-label producer
and co-manufacturer, the versatile Bluffton facility
relies on 32 packaging machines, which include
form/fill/seal systems and flat-bottom bags to support its massive production. In all, about 300 people
work in Bluffton.
At the Plymouth bakery, 60-plus employees currently work on a single state-of-the-art production
line that primarily turns out its signature peanut-butter-filled pretzels as well as gluten-free pretzels.
Located on 8.8 acres, the plant has ample room
