In lieu of full-height walls (which would have blocked a stunning landscape view of the beach), a drape system on ceiling tracks can be manipulated for varying levels of light and privacy. It is a truly unique space that could only come as a result of the three-dimensional, interactive living that the Blumes envisioned. On the same level, the children’s bedrooms are annexed off a common lounge area. A few chairs and a TV create a space in which the kids can unwind. A vibrant orange desk from MotoArt (refurbished from an authentic 1950’s C-119 airplane rudder) provides a fun focal point for the room. But the most unique feature is an impressive glass ceiling, which visually connects the room to the kitchen area above. The bedrooms are both enclosed by sliding barn doors, which are as much fun as they are functional. Each room has its own exterior balcony. Their daughter’s, Kotra points out, conveniently overlooks the back drive and is fit for future serenades (when she’s old enough, of course). Playful drapes hand-sewn by Kotra, with a little help from her mom, soften the room and help tie the space together. Terrazzo show- ers in the bathrooms and scratchproof Avonite counters are sophisticated, yet kid-friendly. The top floor offers a view to behold. Stepping off the last glass tread of the staircase, one is overcome as the scenery unfolds, inviting family and guests to this center of the home. An open plan stretches to all four corners of the house, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing a panoramic view of the ocean. The living room, with its pink accent wall and bright orange sofas, has a serene, peaceful sensibility to it, evidence of the calming effect of the ocean.
