Truly a coupe that properly reflects Maserati’s illustrious past while pointing toward the future, the GranTurismo is aimed squarely at the Bentley Continental GT. However, at about $40,000 less, and sporting what Maserati claims to be a much more generous rear seat, the GranTurismo just might have a strong advantage. Not to mention it is lighter, indicating that it probably handles better and achieves a higher fuel efficiency rating. Perhaps it’s the car to fill a gap no one noticed between the 911 and the Continental. Sporty, but not as aggressive as the Porsche; elegant, but not quite as understated as the Continental; the Maserati snuggles between them well, and offers a more exclusive alternative to the Jaguar XK. Powered by a 405-horsepower, 4.2-Liter V8 with a ZF 6-speed automatic, the GranTurismo is certain to uphold the Trident’s promise of performance. Inside, a most comfortable cockpit spoils occupants with supple leathers, handsomely polished woods, and thick carpets. The switchgear is of remarkable quality, and instrumentation is exceptionally easy to read, all details that make the GranTurismo something very enjoyable indeed.
