THE NORRIS CENTER Hahn and Ron Florance not only took charge of the theatre construction, but also donated the land and money for the shell of the theatre. Overseeing the project was Wally Russell, a local resident with an extensive theatre background, taking the role of Chairman of the Building Committee. With the generous support of the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation Gift, the Center’s namesake, and countless local donors, the necessary funds were obtained to break ground. The intimate 450-seat theatre officially opened in September 1983. Response for the theatre was overwhelmingly positive – so much so the Management Board found itself hiring a larger staff and raising additional funds to cover operations. Originally the theatre had three purposes in mind: hosting professional touring productions, renting a reasonably priced space for the community, and providing needed educational programs. Soon, it was evident the theatre had outgrown the ability to service all its original intentions, with overcrowding and lack of storage major issues. In 1990, Chairman of the Board Dick Moe put into action plans for a second facility, the Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion. In addition to room for classes and staff, the new building offered rental space income to offset some of the costs in running the Performing Arts Center. Throughout its 25 first successful years, the Center built for the community by the community has brought quality entertainment and cultural events to residents of the Peninsula and beyond. Some of the performers that have graced the stage include Broadway legends John Raitt, Rita Moreno and Brian Stokes Mitchell, Hollywood great Debbie Reynolds, comedian Steve Allen, musicians Michael Feinstein and Dizzie Gillespie, and singers Judy Collins, Art Garfunkel and Tom Jones… to name a few. The anniversary season, “Something for Everyone!”, kicked off in September with Gala Opener featuring Davis Gaines of Phantom of the Opera fame. The season continues with a variety of quality plays, magic and musical events. In addition, the Center continues its legacy of education outreach with the Negri Learning Center, providing creative growth to individuals of all ages.
