Luxury Life & Style - (Page 46) AN iNTERviEw wiTh hEAL ThE BAY room – history, social science, science, etc. In doing this, Heal the Bay has created a unique partnership with the State of California and National Geographic to develop the curriculum. Optimistically, we can look to see it begin to be implemented in California schools in about five years. TK: Sounds exciting, and a bit expensive. How is it funded? KH: It’s a substantial amount of money, and we don’t want to see new taxes for the State of California or the school systems. We’re seeking private funding for the entire process. TK: In the big picture perspective, how is it all going? Are you achieving the end goals that we all share? Is the Bay healing? KH: No doubt we are in a better place today and you can see that. We have tidal areas that are full of life and looking again like many people remember them from when they were kids. with looking at projects in the infrastructure with the end goal of helping the ocean. We’ll see some great impact from that end. TK: Karin, what connects you to this place? Why is this home to you? KH: I think it’s the ocean. I’ve traveled all over the world and there are certainly amazing places everywhere, but I have chosen to make this my home because it just feels right to me. There are obviously daily pressures and problems and stresses with living in the Los Angeles area, but when I just stop and go down to the beach and take a walk, I realize that this is just an incredible place. TK: It certainly is. Thank you for the work you do to help keep it that way for all of us. KH: Thank you. • You see many more healthy animals swimming in the Bay. There are fewer beach closures. Great things have happened and are continuing to happen.
