Patrick Killen: I do believe that, in general, there has been an increased focus on aesthetics. This is largely due to the recent influx of money into the communities of the South Bay. The competition among the wealthy to have the “biggest”, “nicest”, “best” can be fierce. I have been floored by a few of the comments I have heard around town. As for becoming a Mecca, I feel that is one of those “be careful what you wish for” statements. We know all to well that one man’s heaven can be another man’s hell. At the end of the day, I believe each and every architect needs to take a hard look at what they are doing and decide if it is truly beneficial to first the planet, in an environmental sense, second the community and finally the client. TK: Is there a correlation between this trend towards better design and the concept of “impermanence” in our architecture here? In the U.S. we tend to tear down our homes every 50 years or so when elsewhere in the world homes of that age wouldn’t even be considered aged in the slightest. Here in the South Bay it’s tough to drive a block without seeing a perfectly good home being torn down. SL: We live in an impulsive, disposable society. At the same time, we are a young, aggressive and an ever evolving society. Too many people build for the moment of need or whim and tend to overlook value and longevity. This perpetuates our tear down society. I think, on whole, we are too wasteful, short- sighted and impulsive. We’re never satisfied with what is. As soon as we’re done with this, we want that. Or as soon as we can afford this, we want that, and that wasn’t good enough. All of this manifests in the need to tear down and build anew. LT: Although it’s a shame to see a decent home torn down and replaced, nearly every structure demolished in the South Bay was built in the post-war suburban sprawl of Los Angeles, and is far from a “perfectly good home.” Advancements in materials, construction methods, building codes and design analysis such as life cycle coating enable current designers to create durable, sustainable and consciously thoughtthrough designs better tailored to the client, the site and the environment than the older homes Photo courtesy of Brian Thomas Jones, brianthomasjones.com.
