YacHting tHe côte d’azur Hôtel de Paris Monaco Perhaps the Grand Dame of the coast, Monaco enjoys an aura of wealth and royal recognition. Staggered along a steep hillside overlooking the sea, the principality’s main hub, Monte Carlo, thrives on the tourism of the well heeled, from its designer boutiques to its high-rolling Casino. Just from the number of strategically-placed Rolls Royces and shiny Bentleys parked outside the Casino, I had an idea of what kind of bets were being placed on the roulette table. But, even if you’re not a seasoned gambler, there are plenty of pleasures to be had here. Next door to the Casino is the famous Café De Paris, a restau- rant with a chic outdoor patio that promises plenty of high quality people watching. I suggest sharing a St. Helena sundae and toasting a glass of fine champagne. And, don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of ways to work your indulgences off. While a daunting climb to some, I found Monte Carlo’s sloping streets quite manageable. Start up at the breathtaking Jardin Exotique (great views) and wind your way down through the shopping areas and port all the way to the Grace Kelly rose garden, a floral tribute to Hollywood and Monegasque royalty. Hotel choices are ample here, with the best adjacent to the Casino. The two most famous of these are the Hôtel de Paris and the Hôtel Hermitage, each with their own luxurious elements. Hôtel de Paris offers one of the grandest rooms around, the Churchill suite, an elegant abode stocked with many of the revered leader’s writings. Those in search of something more contemporary should check out the new appartements at the Hermitage. Also not to be ruled out, the Métropole offers Mediterranean views and a deluxe penthouse in a delicious Baroque style. Èze, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer & cap Ferrat Èze, a medieval village perched high above the coast, flaunts a unique charm and grace of its very own. The area is also known for a special appreciation for the art of perfumery. Riviera visitors looking to get away from the “scene” will find peaceful refuge here, especially at Chateau de la Chèvre d’Or. Their V.I.P. package includes Dom Pérignon Champagne, use of a Ferrari F430 and lunch at l‘Oasis restaurant in Mandelieu (2 Michelin stars). A great place to anchor the yacht and explore, Beaulieu-SurMer enjoys a lower profile than its busy neighbors. This ultimately makes it wonderfully accessible and enjoyable. Just off the small, packed port, you’ll find a number of small cafés and first-class restaurants. One of my favorites 80 Luxury Life & Style May/June 2008
