In conversation with a respected pharmaceutical professor by the name of Vercauteren, Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas learned that the grape seeds they disposed of after harvesting contained one of the most powerful free radical traps in the plant world, polyphenols. When stabilized, they could be immensely beneficial to the skin. With the help of the Pharmacy Faculty of Bordeaux, they debuted their first line of skin products and CAUDALIE was born. CAUDALIE now offers 35 products and seven oils, selling millions per year in 25 countries around the world. In 1999, seeing not only the potential to showcase their products but also an opportunity to translate their beauty philosophy into practice, they opened the first Vinothérapie spa in Bordeaux’s beautiful Château Smith Haut Lafitte. The launch was so successful they needed to double the capacity of their hotel rooms! They followed France with a spa in a Franciscan monastery in the heart of the Italian Piémont, another in California’s Wine Country at Sonoma’s Kenwood Inn and Spa, and a venue in Taiwan. In 2006, they went to the Spanish wine-producing region of Tioja and opened a spa in the contemporary Marqués de Riscal hotel, designed by Frank Gehry. Deluxe treatments offered by the various spas include a Wine Barrel Bath filled with bubbling spring water and fresh microcrushed grape residue and essential oils, a Honey and Wine Wrap that leaves skin silky soft, and an Intoxicating Massage to awaken the senses.
