Luxury Life & Style - (Page 36) THE ART OF SIMON OUWERKERK loved his work so much that she bought nine of his 13 pieces that same day and commissioned additional pieces for her home, an assignment completely foreign to Simon. Homeira’s first request of Simon was to create a piece of art that had a function to it. “This was a challenge for me as, at the time, I was more of a traditional artist, creating pieces that didn’t have a physical function,” he explains. “But, I created a few pieces for her, such as towel holders and tissue box holders that looked like sculptures on their own, and I grew to love creating pieces that also had function.” After developing his first few pieces with a functional bent for the Goldsteins, Simon created several more sculptures that related to the architecture of their modern and eclectic home. Homeira and Simon collaborated to develop certain pieces, with Simon first drawing out the ideas and then developing them into sculptures for the house. Some of Simon’s favorite creations for the Goldsteins have been experiments with different mediums other than metal, including a sculpture entirely made out of toys. “Homeira was sad to throw out some of her son’s toys that he had grown out of, so I created a toy sculpture to hang on the ceiling of their living room which has become one of my favorite pieces,” explains Simon. This led Simon to continue to experiment with toys that he loved from toy stores and create a larger than life wall sculpture for his first solo exhibition. Simon has built a long-lasting relationship with the Goldsteins, enjoying a special bond with the family. “Homeira is a very talented designer herself. We have this creative connection between the two of us, so it’s not only a patronage, but also a great friendship,” says Simon. “Finding her was like heaven for me as an artist, I’m so lucky to be able to work with someone that is also my friend and to make a career out of this work.” In addition to his work for the Goldsteins and other private clients, Simon serves as an elected member of the Board of Arts Manhattan. He continues to work out of his garage in Hermosa Beach. Instead of body surfing, Simon now enjoys jogging along the beach, which gives him time to visualize his next fabulous sculpture.
