My friend Melinda, an American who recently relocated with her Brit husband, asked me if I had ever witnessed the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Even after several visits to the capital, I sheepishly admitted, “No, I haven’t.” Needless to say, she took me by the arm through St. James Park directly to the Queen’s stately residence. Impressive might be an even better adjective to describe it. I thought, “What were the furnishings like, the service, the guests? Was the sovereign herself sipping tea, hoping the noise would soon cease so she could get back to her summer reading?” Most of us can only dream about living like monarchs, princes and princesses, our imaginations cultivated with visits to places like Versailles and Monte Carlo or by watching movies like Roman Holiday and Marie Antoinette. Then again, it’s not entirely impossible to live like a king, or queen, for that matter. Palaces, castles and mansions around the world, many hosting royalty at one time or another, today offer luxury accommodation to those in search of something historical, unique and exceptional. You may never get to sample the crown jewels, but you’ll sure feel regal and relaxed during your visit.
