THE ARTS BEYOND THE PALETTE by Trisha Jochen DAVID MAC INNES merican contemporary artist David Mac Innes has dedicated his life to working in the arts, taking a variety of different approaches along the way. While the majority of his work could be labeled as abstract, Mac Innes’s life work constitutes almost every art form imaginable. David began his training at Erie Technical High School, which, unlike most high schools, had a curriculum that allowed a half-day devoted to drawing and painting from life models and plaster casts. David continued his art education and went on to graduate from the reputable Cleveland Institute of Art. After a brief stint in Pittsburgh, he ended up in New York where he spent over 30 years working as an art director and designer utilizing his talents in print and broadcast advertising and design. Collaborating with high-profile clients such as IBM and Ford Motor Company, David A managed an all-encompassing schedule that included aspects of art from typography and illustration to audio-visual and photography. In addition to putting in long hours at the ad agency, David’s passion for art led him to pursue a successful career as a painter on the side. Inspired by the greats, such as Picasso and Matisse, David explored a variety of ways to create images or, as he says, “let the subject dictate the means.” The results included everything from large abstract paintings, pen and ink sketches and different forms of printmaking. David’s work was featured in several solo and group exhibitions in New York, including solo exhibitions at the Oresman Gallery and Larchmont Art Gallery. David was also honored with several first prize awards throughout his career, including the top honor at the LW Frohlich Arts Competition in New York and at the Mamaroneck Artist Guild Gallery “NY Big Apple Show”. After leaving the agency life in New York, David relocated to Hermosa Beach in 2000 to be closer to his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters. Keeping his passion for art alive, David continues to create art that pushes the envelope. A unique trait that David possesses as an artist is his ability to be flexible with his art and keep up with the ever-changing, fast-paced media world. David now incorporates use of the computer in conjunction with painting. “I think of the computer as an extension of the artist’s palette,” he notes. “Some artists think of it as a corruption, but I don’t – it’s a real tool to me. I use it to explore various aspects of an image prior to the finish.” David’s latest exhibition, currently showing at the Palos Verdes Arts Center, highlights the progression of his style and variety of his works over the years. In addition to featuring his pieces, the show also features a DVD of images designed to inspire artists to think beyond the 38 Luxury Life & Style November/December 2007
