The images are designed to motivate artists to create art using their own creative approaches and not just simply replicate or copy the classics. “I want to encourage artists to take a wider range with their work and go beyond the norm. If students have a basic sense of working in the moment and changing things as they go along, they have a better chance of making a living in today’s art world in anything from film or animation to Web design or architecture,” he says. With his wealth of experience in the art industry, it is clear that David is passionate about inspiring young artists trying to make a living from their talent and desire. “Media is ever-changing, and that makes it interesting. Look at a company like Google and the revenue brought in by their online advertising… everything is moving at light speed, and creative artists have to be flexible enough to move with it,” he explains. “I come from a traditional generation where my art teacher only allowed us to draw with charcoal for six months before we were even allowed to use color. But in this generation, you need to be flexible and willing to adapt your art to make it in more of a commercially acceptable avenue. Sure, there are artists who will just focus on gallery and museum art, which is just as equally positive in my mind, but for those who wish to earn a living in art they have to be flexible.” David goes on to say, “I feel very fortunate in that I’ve been able to use my art background to earn a living, raise a family and move around quite a bit. It is possible to have a career in art. In talking to students, the biggest problem is parents who think that art is a waste. In my opinion, if you are broadly focused with art and are flexible, then there are opportunities to earn a very good living.” After speaking with David, you can’t help but feel encouraged by his valuable insights into today’s art world.
