Luxury Life & Style - (Page 47) ifty years ago, three women formed a partnership that sparked one of the biggest fundraising events in the South Bay. In 1957, Mary Duque, who served as the volunteer head of all Associates and Affiliate groups of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, contacted Betty Learned with a plea to raise $1,000 in the Palos Verdes Peninsula for a new recovery room. She agreed and enlisted the help of fellow Peninsula resident Betty Davidson to devise a plan. They assembled a group of twelve amazing women and held their first fundraiser, a “Ghost Party,” raising over $4,500 for the hospital. Motivated by their success, the group turned their attention to another, more ambitious kind of event. Two of the committee members’ daughters had horse training with Roy Register at the Portuguese Bend Stables. With his generous offer of the facilities and the tireless efforts of the Peninsula Committee, the First Annual Portuguese Bend National Horse Show debuted to hundreds of spectators. The reputation attached to the stables ensured some of the best horses and trainers would attend the event. It was an instant hit. Over the years, the show grew in size tremendously, hosting special events like the Evan Shaw carriage collection, circus stunts and new challenges. The show has also moved twice, first in 1979 to the Empty Saddle Club in Rolling Hills Estates, and then in 1992 to its current home at Ernie Howlett Park. During these later years, the show evolved into an all-English equestrian event and secured the Pacific Coast Horse Shows Association (PCHA) Horsemanship Finals event. For half a century, a winning combination of prestigious entertainment, thousands of dedicated volunteers and charitable support from donors has helped raise over six million dollars for the hospital.
