As one can imagine, expanding the physical area allowed for grape-growing might make some lucky neighboring farmers currently growing other agricultural products very, very happy and very, very rich. In keeping with its diplomatic mission to represent both growers and vignerons, the CIVC’s trip itinerary featured a broad crosssection of Champagne experiences. From the labyrinthine cellars of Vranken-owned Pommery, whose private dining room feels like Versailles, to the humble but tasty lunch shared with pickers at Roger Coulon’s family-owned operation in the village of Vrigny, it was wonderful to see the spectrum of harvest energy in full-swing. Additional visits included stops at Champagne Jacquesson, where the lovely Jean-Hervé Chiquet and I talked American zinfandel (he’s a surprising fan) and lunch with the très formidable Mme. Carol Duval-Leroy, who rather sadly continues in the grand tradition of the widows Clicquot and Pommery before her. For me, personal pilgrimages to the tomb of the venerable mad monk Pérignon and to my favorite vineyard in all of Champagne, the Clos des Goisses owned exclusively by Champagne Philipponnat, were highlights of the trip. For those not yet familiar with Charles Philipponnat’s wines, I highly recommend seeking them out as they offer superb value across all price-tiers and because Charles himself is such a lovely guy. I also made a stop at Comte Audoin de Dampierre’s house, where he showed us his vintage car collection and his vintage 2000 bubbly. Like Philipponnat, the Dampierre wines are less well-known in the U.S. but certainly merit the hunt. One of the best reasons to plan a trip to Champagne is its proximity to Paris; with new, high-speed train service in place, it’s never been easier to explore the chalky crayères first excavated by Romans in the region. I was also moved to realize just how much American blood was shed in this area over the course of two world wars, and while U.S.-Franco relations have been strained in these years of differing Middle Eastern policies, it was good to pause amidst all the bubbles and remember, as they especially do in Reims, that liberté and fine wine are values we still share. • 80 Luxury Life & Style November/December 2007 Photo by Stuart Ziegler.
