THE TRUMP INTERVIEW D T: It's a long story, but it's a long and fa- bled
story. The piece of land is 300 acres. It's probably the best land in the
United States, and many people had their eyes on it for a long period of
time, including me. What happened is, as you know, they built a good
course, and prior to opening, the 18th hole fell into the Pacific Ocean.
The banks fought for years and years with the Zuckermans, and, after the
banks won, I made a deal with them and bought it. I ripped out the old
course and built a brand new one. Many of the magazines, Fairways and
Greens, Southland Golf Magazine, etc., consider it the best golf course in
the state of California, ranked #1. TK: Congratulations. I've played golf
there, walked through the property, had lunch and brunch there. It's
spectacular. DT: They do a good job with the lunch, I tell ya. TK: They
certainly do. It's well known you are passionate about golf, and I bet
it's safe to say you've teed off at some of the best courses in the world.
How do you think Trump National compares? DT: I don't even like comparing
an ocean course to a parkland course because it's a very different
feeling. I think it's among one of the best courses anywhere in the world.
We've done really well with it. In fact, T iger Woods is going to be there
next week, two days playing golf. The thing that sets it apart is that not
only do we have two-and-a-half miles of ocean, and every hole fronts the
ocean, but we're also in Los Angeles. We're not a ten-hour drive from a
major city. TK: Right, not like Bandon Dunes. DT: Sure, Bandon Dunes. It's
fine, but it's in the middle of nowhere. I could get much better land if
you want to go to Alaska. My course is right in L.A., 30 minutes from the
