needs a little retail therapy now and again, and Sacramento is no
different. It’s never been a better time to be a Downtown business
owner. Midtown, t h e city’s artsy enclave en route to Downtown, has its
very own garment district, for example. What’s next, Tiffany’s? Never
say never. In fact, if The Towers at Capitol Mall are to be believed,
“50,000 square-feet of high-end retail” are on their way, making the
property Sacramento’s “premier Downtown shopping pavilion.” But this
project’s just one of many. So, let’s talk shop. Rampant consumerism
powers a robust economy. That’s true everywhere, including Sacramento.
Our city residents are far more sophisticated than often given credit for
– in their tastes, their innovations and their ideas. With or without
public outc r y, there’s something deep inside Sacramentans that resents
any implication otherwise. We have a great sense of self, a strong inner
architecture built on pride, diversity and opinion. Thoroughly singular,
Sacramento is a city that lives, and yes, shops like there’s no
tomorrow. Nowhere is this more evident than Downtown. Entrepreneurs
understand enterprise, but more than that, they recognize an opp o r t u n
i t y when they see it. With Downtown’s building renaissance well
underway, never has there been a better time to be one of Sacramento’s
eager upstarts. Anyone with an endeavoring spirit is doing business in
Sacramento, or, if they’re exceptionally savvy, planning on it. Many
marquee developers have either proposed projects with commercial and
retail space or are currently building. Several such properties are
already on the horizon. The restored Firestone Tire Building at 16th and L
Streets, slated to open in 2007, will serve as a retail complex. At 1000
20th Street, Heller Pacific, Inc. will transform a former 1940s warehouse
52,000 square feet into the MAARS building Midtown Arts, Retail,
Restaurant Scene , offering new retail space to innovative retailers. Epic
Tower at 12th and I Street, designed by Daniel Libeskind and developed by
BNC Development in Denver, might just be the p ro p e r t y that defines
modernity in Sacramento. A residential property with 49 stories of luxury
condominiums, the Epic will break ground on two stories of retail space
51,599 square-feet worth to court some of retail’s most ambitious stars.
Even the long-neglected Railyards at 5th and I Streets will finally be
redeveloped or so it’s been promised and given a compelte retail
transformation. Downtown Sacramento is a series of 22 Sierrastyle's Luxury
