Sugar beet is responsible for around 20% of the global sugar production   worldwide. Sugar beet is a root crop which grows in temperate zones with a   very intense and demanding cultivation. It is therefore mainly concentrated   in the Northern Hemisphere, where it is an important rotational crop, specifically   in Europe. France is the biggest worldwide producer of sugar beet followed by   US, Germany, Russia and Ukraine. France is also the biggest European producer  of sugar.   Sugar beet growers have quickly adopted GM technology. The glyphosate  tolerant trait, launched in 2007, today covers 97% of the area planted in the   USA, having already reached 60% adoption in the second year of launch.   United States sugar beet  has already reached 97%   GM adoption
