01 Global challenges
Global agriculture: growing more from less
Our global challenge:
increase agricultural
productivity by at least
70% in 40 years with
limited natural resources
The ability of our planet to sustain life is fragile and under increasing stress.
Despite significant growth in food production over the past 50 years, 842 million
people in the world still suffer from hunger and even more are malnourished.
By 2050, the global food requirement will increase significantly, driven by a
population increase to more than nine billion and a demand for improved diets,
particularly in emerging markets.
Agriculture is receiving increasing attention worldwide as government and
non-government authorities recognize a need to accelerate productivity in
order to ensure food security and improved nutrition to a growing population.
%
Farmers will need to produce around 1.4 more grain every year, representing
an increase of approximately 30% by 2030 and around 70% by 2050.
At the same time, responding to changes in climate, using the limited natural
resources in a sustainable way and respecting biodiversity pose additional
challenges to achieving increased farm productivity at the required speed.
Agriculture holds the key role to tackling these challenges and achieving food
security today and in the future. The World Food Summit of 1996 explained
that food security exists when "all people, at all times have access to sufficient,
safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life". But reaching this
goal will not be easy.
