Localized Solutions Sears leads the research and development (R&D) operations for Cereals seeds in North America from the Junction City facility. His team of eight head wheat breeders are embedded in research sites across the U.S. and Canada. They develop traits and solutions that address geography-specific production challenges. “Our efforts are focused on creating better farming efficiencies and working with our AgriPro® Associate network to tailor localized solutions that meet their growers’ individual needs,” Sears says. Across all major U.S. cereal-producing geographies, his team is dedicated to giving growers ready access to high-quality, highyielding varieties that address local pest spectrums and meet the demands of millers, bakers and general consumers. “We take our global leadership position in cereals very seriously,” Dreger says. “Our commitment starts with the seed, but it doesn’t end there. In fact, it’s just the beginning.” Commitment to Integration Worldwide, Syngenta invests roughly $130 million annually and dedicates more than 400 employees to Cereals R&D efforts, focused on developing total, integrated solutions to help growers produce more wheat from fewer natural resources. These solutions include not only seeds but also seed treatments, plant growth regulators and a variety of crop-applied chemistries and management practices that target profit-draining weeds, diseases and insects. Educating growers about which tools will help them get the most yield from the varieties they plant is critical, says Jon Rich, Central Plains head wheat breeder and product manager at Syngenta. “Every variety has advantages as well as a possible Achilles’ heel,” he says. “If growers add the right crop inputs to the mix, the varieties they plant will have a much better shot at realizing their full genetic potential.” Today, the Syngenta wheat breeding program is thriving. The company’s first-rate facilities, cutting-edge technologies and bestin-industry researchers contribute to its success in developing top-performing wheat varieties that optimize productivity in the field and marketability throughout the supply chain. With new technologies on the horizon, tomorrow looks even brighter. “In just over 10 years, we’ve tripled our investment in Cereals R&D, nearly doubled testing locations in North America, and we’re not looking back,” says Dreger. “Our program will continue to grow, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for Syngenta, our customers and our industry-leading genetics program.”

WHAT HAPPENS BELOW THE GROUND IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT HAPPENS ABOVE.
