India’s fortnightly focus on electronics design June 16-30, 2009 Automating disease detection By Anurag Kumar Technical Manager R&D Services Mindtree Ltd medical CAD technology and its application for disease detection. The “early health” vision of the healthcare industry is being realised by preventive, predictive, and personalised (P3) medicine. Advanced IT-based disease detection and diagnostics technologies are shaping the P3 trend by transforming medical diagnostics procedures from curative to preemptive. Medical computer-aided detection (CAD) is one such emerging IT-based disease detection technology. Medical CAD allows automated detection of pathologies by interpretation of radiological images using digital signal and image processing algorithms. This article gives an overview of Medical imaging Medical imaging based diagnostics is performed by medical practitioners by interpretation of anatomical images rendered by medical imaging modalities. For instance, chest X-ray radiographs are visually inspected by radiologists for suspected cases of rib fractures. The same radiographs are examined to identify lesions that interpret to a possible case of lung cancer. This has been, and is, the primary methodology of disease diagnosis via medical imaging modalities. Interpretation of medical images for disease diagnosis is subjective. The traditional view of the patient in a hospital room hooked on to patient monitoring devices and cables is gone and the entire healthcare industry value chain (including caregivers and patients) has geared up to a “patient centric” paradigm through remote patient monitoring (RPM). This shift in thinking has been necessitated by the adverse global healthcare scenario—an exponential increase in the number of patients with chronic conditions and an adverse doctor-population ratio. Remote patient monitoring RPM uses sensors to capture and transmit (real-time or store-for- ward) patient biometric data to systems that analyze data and alert caregivers in case of adverse conditions (figure). The patient could be in a hospital or a home or in fact anywhere, given the vast improvements in telecommunication technologies. There are four elements in a RPM system—the sensors to capture the patient data, the clinical gateway that gets data from the device and transmits it in a specified format, the technologies used for connectivity (both wired and wireless), and the applications and algorithms used to analyze the data.
