Keeping The Guam Port Afloat BY MAR-VIC CAGURANGAN By the first quarter of this year, the Port Authority of Guam will have awarded the $22 million contract for the container yard expansion project, which constitutes the final phase of Guam's port modernization program under its 2007 master plan. "This is a 4.6-acre expansion that would essentially expand the footprints of the port," says Joanne Brown, general manager of the port authority. The yard expansion is the largest component of the port authority's $50 million program to upgrade critical facilities at the Jose D. Leon Guerrero Commercial Port to accommodate increased capacity need for organic growth and the upcoming military buildup. "For the most part, everything is in motion except that last portion, which we are initiating now," Brown says. The container and cargo storage yard area currently comprises 26.5 net acres used for container and break bulk storage space, along with maintenance and repair facilities encompassing approximately 27,600 square feet and two warehouses, CFS and Warehouse 1, providing approximately 71,000 square feet of floor space. "We will also build a new terminal gatehouse entry gate-or runway, as we refer to it," Brown says. "There will be lengthier entrance for trucks coming in."
