NEWS BEAT Kiewit to Construct Kapolei's 2nd Elementary School Rendering of the new elementary school in Kapolei A groundbreaking ceremony for Kapolei II Elementary was held in April by the state Department of Education (DOE), general contractor Kiewit Building Group Inc. and D.R. Horton Hawaii, which provided the land. "Kapolei II Elementary represents increased access to a 21st century learning environment that will be valued by the Kapolei community," says Sharon Thom, senior vice president, Kiewit Building Group, Inc. "We're honored to be a part of the team bringing the Department of Education's plans to reality for the keiki of West Oahu." Gov. Neal Abercrombie released $40 million to the DOE last June for construction of the school. The official school name will be selected before the school opens in fall 2015. The 78,404-square-foot school will be built between Kunehi Street and Fort Barrette Road and is expected to serve 750 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 5. The campus will be comprised of seven buildings surrounding a central courtyard including a library, cafeteria and a dedicated arts and science building. The school will have air-conditioned classrooms, learning gardens, playfields and a wireless network throughout all buildings. The project will be designed and built according to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Schools 2009 standards. In addition to LEED Silver Certification, the school will have onsite bio-retention and native landscaping. Multiple drop-off entries for parents and school buses as well as expansion areas for increased enrollment have also been incorporated into the plan. Construction Begins on Salt at Our Kakaako Construction has begun on Salt at Our Kakaako, Kamehameha Schools' 76,000-square-foot retail and restaurant project. Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc. (HDCC) is the general contractor. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2015. The construction of Salt, which is on the block bounded by Ala Moana Boulevard and Coral, Keawe and Auahi streets, will involve the reuse of four existing structures. A 267-stall parking structure along Keawe Street and a 4,500-square-foot building on Coral Street are also planned. Existing surface parking will be converted to an open plaza with a splash-and-play water feature, as 54 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | MAY 2014 Artist's rendering of Salt Warehouse well as recreation and seating areas. Reusing the Quonset roofs and steel frames from the original buildings preserves the area's mercantile culture and reduces construction debris headed for local landfills. "The challenge to reuse these older warehouses and their materials creates an opportunity to build a beautifully gritty shopping and dining experience that can only exist in urban Honolulu," said Christian O'Connor, Kamehameha's senior asset manager, who is in charge of leasing and management of Salt. "This project is uniquely Hawaii. It isn't a cookiecutter mall that could be imported or transplanted from somewhere else."
