The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and General Services Administration hosted a celebration on July 7 to commemorate the start of construction of a new Honolulu FBI field office. To be built on a 10-acre site at Barber’s Point, the new state-of-the-art office structure will be the headquarters of all FBI operations for Hawaii, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa. Scheduled for completion in August 2012, the new 152,000-squarefoot, four-story facility also includes a 20,000-square-foot, single-story annex for automotive and electronic repairs and a secure car parking structure and lot to accommodate 350 cars. It will house approximately 235 agents and administrative personnel of analysts and clerks, consolidating staff at a few different site offices around the island. Once constructed, the building will represent one of the largest federal law enforcement complexes in the Asia-Pacific region. Designed by Architects Hawaii Ltd., the $65 million complex is being built by a joint venture partnership of Charles Pankow Builders Ltd. and Georgia-based Archer Western Contractors – a subsidiary of The Walsh Group based in Illinois – acting together as the general contractor. “Working with Penrose/Walsh FBI Honolulu LLC on this developer-led proposal, Pankow is pleased to have this opportunity to showcase our design-build experience,” comments Mike Betz, vice president and general manager of Pankow’s Hawaii division. “We understand how to be a proactive contributor during the preconstruction documentation phase to create a project of the greatest value for the owner. Offering the owner a contractual single source of responsibility, we provide the most efficient way to guarantee the cost and schedule of the project.” The FBI currently holds offices in the Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Federal Building.
