Industry Canstructs for Foodbank The Honolulu chapter of the American Institute of Architects is presenting its sixth annual Canstruction® competition at Pearlridge Center, Uptown Center court, on Sept. 24 to coincide with “Hunger Action Month.” Local architects and allied design and engineering professionals will be “canstructing” giant structures made entirely of thousands of cans of food, all of which will be donated to the Hawaii Foodbank. This year’s theme is “Canned Cinema – Dinner and a Movie.” The industry teams participating in the event include: Insynergy Engineering, WATG, Richard Matsunaga & Associates Architects, Inc., Bowers + Kubota Consulting, Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc. and KYA Design Group, Inc. The completed structures will be on display until Oct. 8. Members of the public also are encouraged to participate by visiting the two-week exhibit and bringing canned food donations to vote for their favorite structure. The Canstruction structure that receives the most votes (one can equals one vote, and only cans count) will be named People’s Choice Award winner. The event also includes a “Kids Can Corner.” On Canstruction day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m, AIA Honolulu member architects will lead children in building a special structure of cans of their own. Over five years, the Canstruction® competition has raised 180,000 pounds of canned food for the Hawaii Foodbank. This year’s event is being led by co-chairs: Reid T. Mizue, AIA, shimokawa+nakamura; and Janelle Mundon, associate AIA, and Andrew Tang, AIA, both of Ushijima Architects Inc. 6 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | SEPTEMBER 2011 This apple structure, built by the Hawaiian Dredging team, earned the People’s Choice and Juror’s Favorite award last year. The theme was “Kids Can.”
