NewsBeat Summit to Build Kau Gym Construction of the new 43,300-square-foot Kau gym is scheduled to start this month. It likely will open in early 2014. Hawaii County recently awarded a $17 million contract to Summit Construction for the construction of the new Kau District Gym & Shelter. Work is expected to begin this month, with planned completion in 18 months. To be located on the Kau High and Pahala Elementary School campus, the 43,300-square-foot facility will be operated and maintained by the county Department of Parks and Recreation. Because of the district’s proximity to vog emissions, the multipurpose room and recreational room will be built with filtration systems and can serve as a shelter when there is an increased level of volcanic discharge in the area’s atmosphere. The structure also is being built to enhanced hurricane criteria. The gym will house three regulation HHSAA (Hawaii High School Athletic Association) basketball/volleyball courts, and could host the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) basketball or volleyball games. Accessory rooms will include locker and training rooms, and restrooms; a lobby, courtyard, certified kitchen, ticket booths; and office space and storage areas for the state Department of Education, county Parks & Recreation and the American Red Cross. The size and diversity of the facility is in direct response to comments gathered in November and December from the community last year. “The Kau District Gym & Shelter has been designed to expand athletic and recreational opportunities, serve as a destination for community events and emergency shelter during natural disasters,” says Mayor Billy Kenoi.
