Power Partnering BY LEE SCHALLER If you are looking for a roster of Hawaii’s power players, you need look no further than the membership list for NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association, Hawaii chapter. The industry group is filled with a top echelon of officers and leaders of major companies. In addition, these industry leaders are actively involved with the association, attending NAIOP’s breakfast forums and other events while continuously exhibiting a strong measure of pride and support. Mission and Motivation The stated mission of NAIOP is: “To provide effective legislative representation, relevant educational programs, and professional networking opportunities for developers, owners and investors of industrial, office and related commercial real estate in Hawaii.” Has it succeeded in this goal? From the enthusiastic responses of its members, officers and directors for this report, to the usually filled to capacity monthly breakfast forums, popular annual symposium and highly respected industry awards event — the answer would seem to be a resounding yes! But exactly what is NAIOP Hawaii, how long has it been around and who are its members? NAIOP Hawaii was chartered in 1988 and began its existence with just a handful of members. But the potential power, clout and contribution to Hawaii’s economy of those early members became readily apparent. Today, the local chapter has more than 110 member companies 52 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | SEPTEMBER 2012 encompassing key decision-makers across the industry spectrum. Its regular monthly breakfast programs with their top-notch expert speakers and timely topics have become the recognized forum for the discussion and understanding of relevant and impactful issues. And to say that over the years NAIOP Hawaii has become a powerful force in the legislative and regulatory arenas would, indeed, be an understatement. But we’ll let those most actively involved tell the NAIOP story:
