Construction Starts for Habitat Project Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu broke ground on Sept. 17 for Kaukamana Hale, a new affordable housing subdivision in Maili. Kaukamana Hale is a 25-unit project that will be constructed using packaged homes from Honsador, according to Jo Bautista, newly appointed executive director of Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu. Three models will be offered: an 864-square-foot, two-bedroom home, a three-bedroom 1,104-square-foot unit and a 1,200-square-foot four-bedroom house. Both the three and four-bedroom models offer two bathrooms. Plans also include the incorporation of as many LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) practices as possible, such as paving driveways with permeable/ pervious concrete, using roofing with a Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of 78 and installation of solar water heaters. “We also plan to use reused/recycled materials, rapidly renewable materials such as bamboo and other methods of sustainable building,” says Bautista. The units will be sold to families with an annual income no greater than 50 percent of the median income level as established by the City & County of Honolulu. The groundbreaking ceremony for Kaukamana Hale was held on Sept. 17.
