NewsBeat Career Days Hits Record This year’s Construction Career Days (CCD) event, held at Honolulu Community College on Oct. 20-21, had the largest number of participating exhibitors and construction trades in its five-year history, according to Melanie Martin, event president. Eighteen exhibitors from private companies and educational institutions and 14 construction trades engaged students through hands-on activities, while in the heavy equipment area, 34 pieces of construction equipment, several crane simulators and power tools were on display. “Students were able to ride up in a bucket truck/cherry picker, operate a forklift and test their skills on backhoes and skid loaders,” describes Martin. Approximately 1,000 students and teachers from 31 schools on Oahu as well as Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Molokai and Niihau participated in the event. In addition, a $10,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs allowed the CCD organization to pay for transportation for 50 neighbor island students to attend the event. “The event was a huge success again this year,” says Martin. “The Hawaii Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Hawaii Local Technical Assistance Program, and the Honolulu Community College, along with its many private sector partners organized an event that was not only fun for the students, but it exposed them to the many different career options available in the construction industry.” 6 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | DECEMBER 2011
