Hawaii Nature Center Raises Rain Pavilion Rendering of the Hawaii Nature Center The Hawaii Nature Center in Makiki began construction in early November for the new Rain Pavilion. Slated for completion in January, the center will use the pavilion to serve more children each year through its environmental education school programs, weekend calendar activities and nature excursions, as well as community-based environmental restoration projects. The 1,000-square-foot stucture is a $192,000 project in total, with $115,000 for construction. Design and construction partners include Architects Hawaii Ltd., Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company and Englekirk Structural Engineering. Architects Hawaii Ltd. provided its services pro-bono as part of its “1%” program, which connects nonprofits with architecture firms to give one percent of their billable hours annually to pro bono projects. The design is based on a traditional open Hawaiian A-frame structure, with a raised roof for natural light and ventilation. Translucent panels are on one side between timber structural posts to protect participants from wind-driven rain.
