Roofing Cool Roofing Technology Constant advances make new products safer, more energy-efficient By Brenden Clement P eople often ask us, "What's a "cool roof" and how can it benefit my building?" The answer is that a cool roof is a roofing system that reflects more than 70 percent of the sun's energy. Cool roofs keep building interiors cooler, which lowers energy costs and reduces damage to the environment. A high solar reflectance is the most important characteristic of a cool roof. It reflects sunlight and heat away from the building or structure, reducing the roof's surface temperature. This reflectance lowers the radiant heat transfer into the building because of the cool roof's high thermal emittance and keeps the building cool. Building owners and roofing contractors have used cool roofing products for nearly 25 years on commercial, industrial and residential buildings and structures. They're mostly installed on low-slope roofs (roofs with a gentle grade), but can also be found on pitched roofs (roofs with a more steep grade). Saving on Energy Use The benefits of using a cool roof are numerous. Because cool roofs transfer less heat into the building and keep your building cooler, you'll also use less energy for items such as air conditioning, ceiling fans, oscillating fans and so on. Cool roofs can also help air conditioners run more efficiently We Are Cool roofing experts Target Hilo Sarnafil PVC Installation We specialize In: Coatings * Single Ply * Silicones Traditional Roofing * Waterproofing by keeping rooms cooler so that AC units do not need to work as hard to cool spaces. Cool roof coatings can additionally be used on AC ducts to keep the air in the duct cool, which helps AC units run more efficiently and lowers electricity costs. Cool roofs keep building interiors cooler, thereby helping to lower energy costs and damage to the environment. A recent California study found that cool roofs provide an average yearly net savings of almost 50 cents per square foot. This number takes into account the price premium for cool roofing products, increased heating costs in the winter (which most of us don't worry about in Hawaii except at higher elevations), summertime energy savings, savings from less energy use by cooling equipment, and reduced labor and material costs over time resulting from the longer lifespan of cool roofs compared with traditional roofing products. Reducing Environmental Damage By lowering energy use, cool roofs also decrease the production of associated air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Most cool roofs can be installed over an existing roofing system as long as the local Affordable, Reliable, Professional Lic# C-28824 building code permits it.
