Building Management Hawaii - February/March 2012 - (Page 12)

A Conversation With Aimee Harris, Trade Publishing’s New Editorial Director By Jacque Martin with Aimee Harris What do you look forward to the most as you join the Trade team? As I join Trade’s management team, I look forward to working with the company’s seasoned editorial staff. It’s a small, yet mighty team. Combined, the three staff writers have more than 30 years of experience at Trade. That level of job loyalty is a rarity in today’s workplace. To me, it encapsulates the team’s commitment to deliver quality publications designed to serve the local property management, construction and hospitality industries. Why do you want to work for Trade and produce trade publications? At the University of Hawaii, I majored in journalism and minored in environmental studies urban planning. As my first writing job, my time with HONOLULU Magazine was a crash course in everything local, including working with the American Institute of Architects Honolulu (AIA) and the Building Industry Association (BIA) of Hawaii. The more I learned about the city and its built environment, the more I appreciated it (and all of its chaotic quirkiness). Then, it was the sheer genius (as far as I’m concerned) of HONOLULU’s editorial director, John Heckathorn, to hire me as the editor for Hawaii Home + Remodeling magazine over a glass of chardonnay at Murphy’s Bar and Grill. Learning about our city — how and why it’s designed and built the way it is — reveals a lot about Hawaii’s history, politics and future. No doubt, I will continue my exploration of Hawaii through working with Trade Publishing and its industry experts. As a local business since 1954, Trade has chronicled the development of the Islands for more than 50 years. And, we will continue to do so. Trade Publishing understands that a key to operating a successful business in the Islands is working together and supporting each other’s efforts. And our business-to-business publications help our local industries do just that. How do you see BMH and the other publications changing as you take the helm? In the new year, Trade Publishing is committed to making each magazine an even greater resource for our readers. This calls for an expanded online presence, with real-time breaking news, extra coverage and new advertising opportunities. The Web will not replace the publications that our readers rely upon; rather, it will enhance their content and give readers the opportunity to learn more about the topics they care about most. What is your number 1 priority as you begin your new job? As Trade’s editorial director, I’ll be the editor for Building Management Hawaii (BMH) magazine, while overseeing its five sister magazines. My No. 1 priority is to introduce myself to our contributing writers and to better familiarize myself the industry, while looking for new ways to grow all of the publications. www.buildingmanagementhawaii.com 12 February-March 2012 BMH http://www.buildingmanagementhawaii.com
