NEWS BRIEFS HRA Tabs 2014-15 Officers The board of directors of the Hawaii Restaurant Association (HRA) was elected in June and will serve from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. The board: * Dirk Koeppenkastrop, Ph.D., founder and co-owner, Il Gelato Hawaii, chair * Eron Read, director of restaurant and retail development, Kona Brewing Company, chair-elect * Pat Kashani, president, Auntie Pasto's (Beretania), Tropics Tap House, vice chair * Allen Farinas, president/CEO, GRYLT, treasurer * Tushar Dubey, president, Hokulani Bake Shop, secretary * Bryan Andaya, chief operating officer, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, immediate past chair Six new directors also were elected, representing restaurant and allied members. They are: Michael Miller of Tiki's Grill and Bar, Allen Farinas of GRYLT, Thomas Metzger of Cici's Pizza, Thomas Frigge of TOBE Co. Food Safety, Biff Graper of Colliers International and Conrad Nonaka of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. Dirk Koeppenkastrop Exhibit Shows Grand Days of Early 1900s The Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort, and Matson Navigation Company are presenting "A Royal And Matson Lines Celebration & Feast," an exhibit of photographs of menus and artwork from posh parties that took place at the iconic resort and aboard Matson Lines passenger ships. The exhibit, which debuted in July, is open to the public at the resort's Coronet Lounge and will remain on display for 12 months. More than 30 images from the late 1920s to the late 1960s show guests of The Royal Hawaiian and passengers who sailed aboard Matson ships. The photographs include festivities from The Royal Hawaiian's opening night on Feb. 1, 1927, Matson's S.S. Lurline 10-day cruise equipped with 35,000 pieces of fine china and 9,532 pounds of butter, and luxurious food displays. ABOVE: Passengers have a late lunch aboard a Matson cruise ship. HRA Names Avanni as Operations Manager The Hawaii Restaurant Association (HRA) has named Ann-Marie Avanni, a former wine industry executive, as the new operations manager, replacing Sandy Miller who will be moving to the mainland. "Ann-Marie is joining HRA at a time when we are increasing membership, fine-tuning communications, and providing more value to members," says Roger Morey, HRA's executive director. "She comes from the hospitality industry and understands the importance of supporting our members so they can accomplish their goal of serving customers." Avanni spent more than 15 years in management, communications, sales and marketing within the wine industry. As a founding partner of Folio Fine Wine Partners, a Michael Mondavi Family Co., Avanni worked nationally and internationally with restaurateurs, hoteliers, caterers, retailers, winemakers and brand owners.
