Santa Barbara - Return to the Pier
When the hosts of the Tecolote 5000 said
they wanted me to talk to Tim Hornsby and
David Petrovics about a new race registration
tool, I was admittedly a little skeptical. I mean,
what's wrong with what I'm already doing? (Just
about everything.) So, I tried to focus on what
they were showing me.
"Enough! You had me at 'results are posted
instantaneously'!" So we tossed the young developers the Santa Barbara Return to the Pier race
as our series trial effort. Here's how the weekend
went... From my perspective:
A 3.5 hour drive to Ventura, stay overnight,
pack: winter clothes, jack, computer, hotspot,
iPad, extra layer of clothes, deck jacket, gloves,
timing sheets, copies of Pacific Paddler magazine.
Make the drive up the coast to motel 6' -they
always leave a light on for me. Sunrise in Santa
Barbara- beautiful, albeit a bit chilly, but not
complaining as I am wrapped in three-layers. Set
up four computers and start registration.
"Sign up your profile on paddleguru.com"
"What's that? Why?"
"It's our new race registration site, trust me
you're gonna love it!"

they go!!! In the meantime, yum a brownie! Oh!
Here they come, time, time, time. Finish, finish,
finish. Results get loaded by number and finish
time, automatically connect to person and division. Sort by division.
Short course paddlers enjoy a homemade
chili lunch.
The wind changes back, long course reverts
to original course direction. Off they go!
Awards for short course are ready, announced
and distributed. Yum, another brownie!

"As I hand you this 1st place trophy, your
times are already on the Internet, as a matter of
fact, Mike there is using his smart phone right
now to check his time compared to the nearest
competitor."
Life is indeed good!
The weather was fantastic, seeing 120 pad-
dlers enjoy the water, the beach and racing was
a great way to bring in the new year.
I also want to share with you Greg Crouse's
story. One of our series paddlers, as well as a
SCORA paddler, vet, and disabled athlete, is training to make his way to the Paralympics in 2014.
