Molokai World Championships The Molokai World Championships is looking to have it’s strongest and largest field for many years when the start gun goes off on Sunday, May 19. Making this legendary race more attrac- tive and more accessible for paddlers of all levels and all ages, the race organizers have for the first time included two-and-three-person relays, plus double ski and double ski relay categories for all juniors and seniors. We are expecting the usual large contingent of watermen from Australia, and with Oscar Challupsky's record 12th win in 2012, there looks to be a group of South African hundreds of people for the most worthy cause of title. Many international paddlers have expressed or developmental delay to give them the best champions ready to take on the big 'O' for the interest this year, and we are also expecting more mainland US paddlers and Hawaii’s best. The Molokai World Championships have this year also teamed up with one of Australia’s most popular fund raising paddle sport events, the “Life Start Kayak 4 Kids” community fund raising paddle across Sydney Harbor. On the 24th of March, 2013 this event will start underneath Sydney’s iconic Harbor Bridge, cross the mag- nificent harbor for 10 miles and finish at beautiful Manly Cove. Every year this event attracts 20 Pacific Paddler - April 2013 supporting children with an intellectual disability possible start in life. The event entries include mums and dads, kids and ‘weekend warriors’ on all sorts of paddle craft - plus some of the best paddlers in Australia. The Molokai World Championships Race Director (Shelley Oates-Wilding) was the official event Ambassador of the “Life Start Kayak 4 Kids” event before moving to Hawaii. Shelley, a two time kayak Olympian, surf lifesaving ski World Champion and eight-time Na Wahine O Ke Kai winner, is now Head Coach of the local Ikaika Watermen’s Program and has maintained contact with the “K 4 K” event organizers. She is also the current official event Ambassador, as well as Guy Leech, a friend from Manly. Guy is a former World Champion surf ironman and is also a previous winner of the Molokai World Championships. In supporting both events, Hawaiian Airlines will offer the overall single craft winner of the “Life Start Kayak 4 Kids” event return flights for two persons from Sydney to Honolulu. The winner will also receive free entry to the 2013 Molokai World Championship. So one of Australia’s best will defi- nitely be here in Hawaii this year to mix it with the best from all around the world.
