PNWOCRA Canada By Laurel Archer A vast land with extremes in climate, Canada's pockets of outrigger enthusiasts experience different paddling seasons and water conditions. On the west coast, we are racing in rain or shine come January and February, while the east is still slammed by snowstorms and the vast interior waterways are frozen over. In winter, a big boat like a V12 is a good place to be. Consequently, Lotus Sports Club's annual V12 race, The IceBreaker, is a popular early season race for paddlers to warm up for upcoming OC6 events. On January 18th V12 racers had foggy, calm conditions on Indian Arm. The top three overall times for the eight heats with five crews in each, except one (468 seats total!) were: 1. FCRCC Rejected 26:15 2. Dragon Zone One West Open 28:16 3. Fort Langley CC Bedford Gang 28:19. A week later over at Jericho, a much-less sheltered venue, the crazier Vancouverarea paddlers and friends from the Pacific Northwest took the chance of an icy plunge racing surfski, SUP, OC1 and OC2 in the PNWOCRA small boat series race #2. JOCC hosted the January 25th event and for better or for worse, depending on how you like your conditions, Burrard Inlet was placid.
