PAA Koa Nui
In early March, the Paddling Athletes
Association (PAA) ran it's 8th annual
two-day event, the NS Air Koa Nui
Championships out of Hawaii Kai
Marina.
Race organizer Manny Kulukulualani
explained the three stages in the series.
The first stage is a sprint, about one-anda-half miles in the Hawaii Kai Marina.
Next, stage two is from Makapu'u to
the Hawaii Kai Shack, about 8-miles,
and stage three is from Makapu'u to
the Anuenue canoe site at the Hilton in
Waikiki, about 18 miles. These courses are
subject to change depending on the winds.
This year, the lack of Trades led
Manny to swap the races around. The
18-mile distance race was held first on
Saturday and the sprints were moved to
Sunday.
Manny seemed relieved after the last
race on Sunday was over. "We had nice
waters up the wall today (the cliff from
Hanauma Bay to Portlock). If we had
tried to go from Makapu'u to the Hilton
today, we would have been miserable. We
had to make a decision a couple of days
ago with the forecast for no winds. We
can't seem to get a break," he chuckles.
"Every weekend the winds die, but we
had a little bit of surf, so now we are
hoping for the Trades to come back for
the solo and the relay," which are races
from Molokai to Oahu across the Kaiwi
Channel.
The winner of Koa Nui is determined
by the paddler with the lowest score.
In each race, the paddler accumulates
points depending on their finish, 1st gets
one point and so on. Travis Grant won
with his low score of 12 - it was also
the third year in a row he has won Koa
Nui. Second place went to Bobby Pratt
with 16 points and Kaawa Nolan had 20.
Race organizer Manny took 4th. Monica
Esquivel won the women's division with
6 points followed by Anna Mathisen, 13
and Alana Goo-Frazier, 19. Full results
with division winners are at PAA's website
www.paahawaii.com/koa-nui-archiveresults/.
After the race, lunch and awards were
held at the Hawaii Kai Shack located at
the finish.
