Kauai Hoe Wa' a Kauai's one-man association, Kauai Hoe Waa, has now enjoyed 14 years of hosting outrigger canoe racing in OC-1, OC-2, Surfski and SUP. This season has seen an extraordinary turnout for the first four races with many new faces joining the fun. Because of the weather conditions, all races have been held on the island's east side which also has provided some extremely interesting and challenging conditions. On April 10, the Island Championship, the last regular season race, will be held on Kauai's North Shore. It will begin at Anahola and end at Hanalei Pier. After the race, paddlers and guests can enjoy drink, food, our awards and music in Hanalei's Tahiti Nui. The open class of paddlers this year has been dominated by Kauai's elite: Mark Fraiser, Maui Kjeldsen, Kailoa Forest, Tyrus Siale, Jesse Palumbo, Christian Martson Jr., Luke Evslin and Makana Denton. On May 7, Kauai Hoe Waa hosts the premier athletic event held on the island of Kauai, the 14th annual international Kauai World Challenge. This 36-mile costal relay is expected to draw 150 canoes and international paddlers. The event consists of 4-legs from Kapaa, to Hanamalulu, to Kalapaki, to Poipu with a finish at the Salt Pond. The Thursday before the Kauai World Challenge will be the warm-up race and registration/sign-in for dinner on Friday night. After race festivities include live music, beverages of all kinds and great food lasting well into the afternoon, all under a big tent at the Salt Pond Beach Park.
