The race experience began on Friday night at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa for the Registration and Merchandise Expo. Paddlers were given race bags filled with goodies and a MoanaKai race jersey at registration followed by an awesome selection of pasta, salad and yummy desserts sponsored by the Hyatt. The Merchandise Expo included vendors like Da Life Outdoor Gear, KaiKini Bathing Suits, new paddle gear company MoanaKai, Planet Sun, Kona Red and Kamanu Composites. Paddlers were greeted on Saturday morning with blue skies, moderate trades out of the east/northeast with great open ocean swells to ride. The ideal conditions throughout the 34-mile coastal relay race created the perfect setting for some awesome wave riding for the paddlers. The race began at Wailua Beach Park at 8:00 am. OC1, OC2 and surfski teams paddled from Wailua Beach to Salt Pond Beach Park with paddler exchanges at specific relay points. The first relay change was at Hanamaulu Beach Park, then on to Kalapaki Bay in front of the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club. The paddlers performed their final exchange in Waiohai Bay in Poipu where they paddled to the finish at Salt Pond Beach Park. The Stand Up Paddle (SUP) teams paddled from Waiohai to Salt Pond Beach Park. Thanks to amazing community sponsorship, a $10,000 cash prize purse was given for the elite division, as well as for specific age divisions. The OC1 men’s elite division winner was Team Kamanu 1 comprised of Jimmy Austin from Oahu and Danny Ching from California with a time of 3:28:27. They narrowly beat Team Kai Waa/Lanikai, Robert Creps and Patrick Dolan from Oahu by 76 seconds. Third place went to Oahu’s Manny Kulukulu’alani and Alfred Van Gieson with a time of 3:31:35. The top male team from Kauai was Moke Action, Aaron Labuguen and Tyrus Siale who finished in 10th place with a time of 3:48:18. The Kai Wa’a Wahine team of Noe Auger from Kauai and Claire Townsend from Oahu won the OC1 women’s elite division in a time of 4:08:01. Second place went to Team Kamanu Wahines, Jane McKee and Lindsey Shank of Oahu in 4:09:47. Third place went to all Kauai team Melissa Burovac and partner Robin Jumper in a time of 4:32:33. Auger stated, "We started the day off with a beautiful prayer from Lei Wann and Company. The prayer asked for waves and wind that are ideal for us paddlers and it is exactly what we got!
